CENTER OF A POPULATION OF MILLIONS
The city of Mount Vernon is an urban/suburban community
located in the southern portion of Westchester County. Its 68, 381
residents live within 4.2 densely populated square miles.
The cultural diversity of the city's population increased
phenomenally in the decades between 1970 and 2000. In 2000, the
percentage of foreign-born city residents grew to a high of 29% compared
to 22% in 1990, 17% in 1980 and 13% in 1970. In recent years, there has
been an influx of new immigrants from Latin America, Europe, Asia and
Africa. At this time, it is estimated that there are residents of
the city who hail from over 100 foreign countries.
The city's current population - although considered to be
somewhat older than that of the country as a whole - reflects its
proportionally large, stable workforce. Skilled and semi-skilled
blue collar workers make up a considerable segment of its working
population, an asset tapped by Mount Vernon's many industries. In
addition, in recent years, the city has been attracting numerous
professional and service employees.
Mount Vernon's economic strength lies in its industrial
base. Although known as "The City of Homes", eight percent
of the city land area is devoted to industrial use. This industrial
base, when added to the commercial business areas, constitutes nearly 12
percent of the city's land area. Major manufacturers, research
facilities, distribution centers and smaller specialized firms have found
Mount Vernon's centralized location and its large and stable workforce to
be beneficial to their businesses.
The city of Mount Vernon has developed a strong
public-private partnership between local government and the business
community. This partnership - along with the city's long term
commitment to economic and human resource development, its proximity to
regional markets, its relatively inexpensive commercial space and its
readily available labor force - makes Mount Vernon a location of
outstanding opportunity for your business.
