MOUNT VERNON

A PLACE TO RAISE YOUR FAMILY

A family entering Mount Vernon will find a mix of housing for every taste and income.  Known as the "City of Homes", Mount Vernon has 110 miles of tree-lined streets with single and multiple family residences.

For those who prefer a cosmopolitan style of living, Mount Vernon has beautiful high rise condominiums and cooperative apartments available, as well as a myriad of rental opportunities.

Population:

According to the 2000 census, the population of Mount Vernon is 68,381 from over 100 different nationalities.  Our people are from all walks of life, from young professionals to individuals of statewide, national and international stature.

Religious Institutions:

All religious faiths are represented by churches, temples, synagogues and mosques.

Schools:

The Mount Vernon public school system has 11 elementary schools, two middle schools, one comprehensive high school and one alternative high school.  The elementary schools were named the most improved schools in NYS on the ELA Assessment while both high schools have a strong academic program.  Adult education programs are also available.  There are also several parochial schools and one Montessori school.  Westchester Community College has opened an Extension Site on Gramatan Avenue.

Health Care:

Excellent health care is offered in Mount Vernon through The Mount Vernon Hospital.  The Mount Vernon Neighborhood Health Center provides all of the basic outpatient services necessary for day to day health care.

Library:

Mount Vernon has a free public library that is the largest public library in the county.  Housed in a landmark building, it offers all the facilities of a research library, along with a huge children's and young adults' section.

Media:

The Journal News is a morning newspaper published seven days a week by the Gannett Suburban Newspapers.  The Mount Vernon Inquirer is a local monthly newspaper and the Mount Vernon Independent is a local weekly newspaper.  WVOX and WFAS are local radio stations in nearby communities. Time Warner Cable TV has the exclusive Mount Vernon franchise and provides the city and its residents with a public access studio.  Mount Vernon is also part of the New York City newspaper and media market.

Recreation:

A full time Department of Recreation furnishes recreational activities year round including baseball, basketball, softball, touch football, track, golf, tennis and handball.  Hartley Park, located in the downtown business district, underwent a massive renovation project to return this 100 year old park to its original grandeur.  Most playgrounds throughout the city have also been renovated.  Mount Vernon also boasts a large county swimming pool in Willson Woods.

Shopping:

Mount Vernon has extensive shopping downtown on Gramatan and Fourth Avenues, as well as uptown in the city's Fleetwood section.  The Sandford Boulevard corridor has been redeveloped with Best Buy, Target, Bed Bath & Beyond, T.J. Maxx, Petco, Famous Footware, CVS, Staples, Dunkin Donuts, Subway and Super Stop & Shop.
